Five test calls before you buy anything
Every vendor's demo sounds great on the scripted call. Run these five before you sign — the honest vendors will hand you a test line.
The rambling caller
A caller who takes 40 seconds to get to the point. Does the agent stay patient, or loop and frustrate them?
The off-script request
Ask for something outside the service list. A good agent says what it can't do and offers the human path.
The accent and the truck noise
Call from a moving car or in a heavy accent. This is where demo-quality agents and production agents diverge.
The 'give me a person' test
Say you want a human. The handoff — or the refusal — tells you how the vendor thinks about callers.
The booking attempt
Actually try to book. Does it hit your real calendar, or take a message that becomes your job?
Where we fit — and where we don't
Sofi is built for home-service businesses and local SMBs where the phone is the revenue line: plumbers, HVAC, electricians, salons, clinics. Her differentiator is speed-to-lead — she calls your web leads back in under a minute — plus bilingual EN/ES switching and an AI disclosure on every call. If you need a restaurant reservation system (Slang), a dealership DMS integration (Numa), or live humans on every call (Ruby, Smith.ai), buy that instead — this guide works either way.
The test: put your own number in the form on our home page and your phone rings inside a minute — with the agent that would answer your line. Try the live demo →
Frequently asked
How much does an AI receptionist cost in 2026?+
Self-serve plans start at $20–$60/mo (Dialzara, Reception AI, Rosie). Mid-market runs $99–$400/mo. Vertical specialists for restaurants, dealerships, and home services run $399–$789/mo or quote-only. Hybrid services with human backup start around $150/mo. For comparison, a full-time receptionist costs $3,000–$4,900/mo before taxes and benefits.
Will callers know they're talking to an AI?+
The good ones tell them upfront — and disclosure usually builds trust rather than breaking it. Ask any vendor whether disclosure is on by default and whether you control the wording.
Can an AI receptionist book into my calendar?+
The best ones write directly to Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, or vertical tools (ServiceTitan, Jobber, OpenTable). The test is whether the booking lands as a real slot — not a message asking you to call back.
What happens when the AI can't handle a call?+
This is the question that separates vendors. You want a defined escalation path — warm transfer, waterfall dial-down to your team, or a flagged callback — configured before launch, not discovered after a bad call.
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small business?+
When calls are being missed and requests are repeatable (hours, pricing, booking), yes — owners consistently report recovered jobs exceeding the subscription cost. It's a poor fit when call volume is tiny or every call needs expert judgment.
